How to Program Travel Limits in Jackshaft Side-Mounted Garage Door Openers

Travel limits and learn buttons

Travel limits regulate the points at which a garage door stops when moving up or down. This feature is crucial as setting the travel limit too high can damage a door, make the spring lose tension, and tangle the cables. This blog intends to guide homeowners on how to program travel limits for jackshaft side-mounted garage door openers. This guide will help you with Chamberlain and Liftmaster models. So, if you are looking to set the travel limits for the models listed below, read on:

  • Chamberlain Wall Mount RJO20C
  • Chamberlain Wall Mount RJO101
  • LiftMaster Jackshaft Operator Elite Series
  • Liftmaster Wall Mount 8500CMC
  • Liftmaster Wall Mount 9822MC

The guide is designed for the opener with travel limit buttons, as shown in the picture. Other models have different methods for programming travel limits.

Programming the Travel Limits with a Black and Yellow (or purple) Button

Start by making sure your garage door is closed and the opener is engaged in the shaft. For additional guidance, refer to the red cord. Now, let’s get into programming your garage door opener travel limits.

1. Open the flip cover on your jackshaft opener.

2. Press and hold the black button until the LED begins to flash slowly.

3. Once flashing, press and hold the black button to move the door to your desired upward travel position.

It’s a good idea to use green tape to mark the spot where you want the door to stop. Be cautious about setting the upward travel too high, as this could cause your cables to lose tension and tangle when the door closes. Always double-check that the cables remain taut after you’ve set the upward travel position. This ensures smooth operation and longevity for your garage door system.

Tip: As the door nears its desired height, gently tap the remote to make small adjustments until it reaches the perfect position.

After getting in the desired up position, press the button on your remote control (or wall button) to start moving the door down. As soon as it starts moving down, immediately press the yellow button to adjust the downward position. Timing is crucial here; if you take too long, it won’t work. That’s why it’s recommended to have your remote control close by when setting up.

Next, keep pressing the yellow button to set the desired downward position. This step is essential for ensuring your garage door opens and closes correctly. After you’ve set the limits, press the button again to test if the programming is successful. And there you have it! You’ve learned how to program travel limits on your garage door opener.
